About
The National Military Club, commonly known as the Cercul Militar Național, is the cultural institution of the Romanian Army. This remarkable building, created in the French neoclassical style by architect Dimitrie Maimaroiu, has a fascinating history dating back to 1911 when the construction was started. It was inaugurated a few years later, in 1923, becoming an architectural beauty in the heart of Bucharest.
The palace was built by architect Dimitrie Maimarolu and a team of engineers, including Anghel Saligny, who also designed the famous King Carol I Bridge over the Danube. The palace was intended to be a cultural and social center for the officers of the Bucharest military garrison.
Prior to the construction of the National Military Club, the site was home to an inn and a church. The Sarindar Church, an old place of worship, held immense historical significance. Sadly, over the years, several earthquakes caused significant damage to the church, ultimately leading to its complete demolition.
Where the Sarindar Church once stood, a magnificent fountain known as the Sarindar Fountain now is standing. This fountain serves as a poignant reminder of the church's former presence and pays homage to its historical importance. With its elegant design and tranquil ambiance, the Sarindar Fountain adds to the allure of the National Military Club complex.
The palace has a long and tumultuous history. During World War I, it was occupied by German troops, who destroyed the building's interiors. It was rebuilt after the war and reopened in 1923. It was renamed the Central House of the Army and used for propaganda purposes during the communist dictatorship. It reverted to its previous name and function as the National Military Club following the 1989 revolution.
Today, the palace is open to the public and hosts various cultural events, such as concerts, exhibitions, conferences, and courses. It also has a library, a restaurant, and several halls with different styles and decorations.
