About

The fortified church of Homorod stands as a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of the region. It is located in the village of Homorod, Brasov. The village was founded in the 12th century and is known as Hamruden in German and Homoród in Hungarian.

The fortified church dates back to the second half of the 13th century. During the early 14th century, the church underwent its first restoration, which expanded the paintwork and adorned it with high-quality frescoes. In the late 15th century, the Romanesque church was fortified to protect against invaders.

The tower served a defensive purpose and rises to an impressive 27.70 meters over seven levels. The eighth level houses a defensive corridor with a wooden balustrade and the three church bells. The tower-dungeon, made of stone blocks above the choir, was a formidable defence mechanism for the church of Homorod.

The western wall of the tower is supported by an arch that was filled with stone to prevent it from collapsing. As a result, the choir was separated from the hall, which became impractical as a place of worship.

One of the church’s most remarkable features is its well-preserved medieval murals in the old choir. These artistic treasures offer a rare opportunity to witness the creative expression of the Saxons who once called this place home.

Although the church is not usually open to the public, visitors can contact the caretaker to arrange a viewing. The lack of commercial tours to this site means that those who make the journey are rewarded with an intimate experience of the church's interior, free from the crowds often found at more well-known tourist sites.

Visiting the fortified church of Homorod is an adventure that takes you off the beaten path. This unique experience offers an authentic and personal encounter with Transylvania's history.

The fortified church of Homorod is a hidden jewel waiting to be discovered. Its unique blend of history, architecture, and art makes it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the heart of Romania.
