About
The Prejmer Peasant Fortress, which houses the local Fortified Church, is one of Europe's best preserved fortifications and oldest historical monument in Brasov. It is one of the few buildings that was not destroyed by the communists.
The Teutonic Knights started to build the fortress in Gothic style in 1211, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The inhabitants of the settlement, originally Saxons, built the walls of the Peasant Fortress to defend themselves against Turkish invasions. The fortress is in the shape of a circle surrounding the Evangelical Church, with walls 12 meters high and 3-4 meters thick. The fortress was attacked by the enemy 50 times.
It is said that the fortress fell only once to the enemies, but only because they came as friends and then turned into conquerors after entering the fortress.
