About
The Old Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas in Râșnov is the oldest Orthodox church in southeastern Transylvania. It was built in several stages, with archaeological evidence indicating that it was originally built in the 13th century.
The altar and the small nave belong to this architectural phase. In 1384, the church was lengthened and enlarged with the support of the ruler of the Romanian Country, Radu I. The Gothic imprint of the church architecture dates from this period.
In 1773, the church was enlarged by contributions from Brasov merchants, Ioniță and Radu Boghici. Its present form dates from the third decade of the 19th century.
The Byzantine interior painting is believed to have been done in the 17th century.
The church has received numerous donations from rulers and nobles over the centuries.
It is a Class A national monument and is listed on the National List of Historic Monuments.
