About
In the immediate vicinity of Brasov, only 15 km away from it, is the Rasnov Fortress. As soon as you get there, your eyes are automatically drawn upwards to the impressive fortress. It is strategically positioned on a hill above a rich forest, surrounded by massive stone walls, and guard towers with orange roofs seem to keep a watchful eye on the fortress.
The fortress was built between 1211 and 1225 by the inhabitants of Rasnov to protect themselves from Tatar and Turkish invasions. It was conquered only once, in 1612, when the invaders managed to find the secret way to the spring that supplied water to the people inside the fortress. Later, between 1623 and 1642, a well was built, 146 metres deep.
In the past, villagers used to retreat here so often that they had to build a school and a chapel, at least 30 houses and other buildings associated with a village. The defensive system included nine towers, two bastions and a tied bridge.
Throughout its history it has also suffered unpleasant events such as a fire in 1718 that partially destroyed it and then an earthquake in 1802 that damaged it. In 1850 the fortress was abandoned and later became a ruin, but was restored for the first time during the communist period.
Today, the site is the best preserved fortress of its kind in Romania. Those who decide to visit are delighted to stroll among the mighty watchtowers, buy medieval-themed souvenirs and handicrafts and admire views of the rolling hills from the highest point of the fortress. Visitors can also try their hand at archery in the adjacent grassy meadow. The Râșnov Fortress is undoubtedly a unique place to spend an afternoon in medieval spirit.
